We now at least have a full slate of candidates for the #Python steering council! Now we just have to wait and see if how many more people get nominated before the 28th.

Incredibly rare photo of Schrödinger's cat.

I always follow back, and really appreciate and follow boosters

Maths at internet speed. On 16 Nov, Justin Gilmer arxiv.org/abs/2211.09055 makes a breakthrough on the #unionClosedSets conjecture, achieving a lower bound of 0.01 instead of the conjectured 0.5. The next day, Gil Kalai blogs about it at gilkalai.wordpress.com/2022/11 . Four days after that, three independent groups optimize the argument to \(\frac{3-\sqrt{5}}{2} \approx 0.38\): arxiv.org/abs/2211.11504 arxiv.org/abs/2211.11689 arxiv.org/abs/2211.11731 . New paper on #arXiv!

Imagine you're given a box that's supposed to produce some unknown qubit state \(|\psi\rangle\). While it mostly works, it occasionally fails and outputs the orthogonal state \(|\psi^\perp\rangle\). How can you combine several outputs of such a box to obtain one reliable copy of \(|\psi\rangle\)?

We call this problem "#quantum majority vote" since the goal is to find the majority state from a list of unknown quantum states.

Finished #Sandman on #Netflix last night. Great central performance by #TomSturridge . Probably the most faithful comics adaptation I''ve ever seen, with most episodes precisely matching a comics issue by @neilhimself and his various artists. I wonder what other comics series could support such a faithful issue-by-issue adaptation? (Side-by-side comparison images from screenrant.com/the-sandman-net )

From tonight. There were clouds. The stone was carved by people about 6000 years ago, and then carved again and placed there by people a hundred years ago.

I've been photographing the night sky with my Pixel 6 Pro trying to find an eerie space where the ground and the sky meet...
Here are a few from last night.

New on this instance of Mastodon and a retired physicist happy to join this community!

@level98 you're welcome to join! We're just getting started so the server is still pretty small and quiet.

A wonderful performance of Canto Ostinato, a superb 1976 work by Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt: vimeo.com/31357966

Learned about it via @guenp

From Wikipedia:

"The most remarkable aspect about this work is the amount of freedom that is given to the performer(s). The piece can be performed with different instruments and a different number of performers."

It's composed of 106 sections which can be repeated as wished: "Performance may take from some two hours to more than a day."

Realised I never got round to writing an #introduction.

Hi, I'm Cas! I'm a PhD student working on Topological Solitons, currently vortices in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory.

In my spare time I enjoy watching films and anime, walking, and reading.

Yay, the physics.social Mastodon server now supports LaTeX equations! 🎉 Many thanks to our math friends over at Mathstodon.xyz, @christianp for sharing your code.
I'll start with one of my favorites, Euler's formula
\(e^{i\theta} = \cos \theta + i\sin \theta\)

Yay! I got it to work
\(i\hbar \frac{\partial \Psi}{\partial t} = -\frac{\hbar^2}{2m}
\frac{\partial^2 \Psi}{\partial x^2} + V \Psi\)
Thanks @christianp

Today in QEC on the arXiv

Actually this paper isn't about QEC. But it reminds me of the repetition code in some ways, which is what caught my eye.

There's a thread on it by @MarisOzols here

(though if you are on the app, you'd probably be better off clicking the handle rather than the link).
