@oschene I appreciate your lovely nautilus and offer you some turbinate snails…

@logicalelegance A very interesting approach -- I will try that. I worked on coiled shells a few years back, using cones. My notes are not good -- this one is called Excursus zayin or sometimes Raup's model 2a. #origami #CurvedSurface #developable
Happy #FibonacciDay to those who celebrate! 🐚✨
We love finding the #Fibonacci sequence in nature and in #maker projects — like @jasoncoon's #electronic #art! 🤩
Where else have you seen cool examples of Fibonacci in action? 👩🔬🔎🍥
cozy in a mac rom scarf. specifically this is a slice of the ROM from a Macintosh IIsi. here's how it was made. i used @th 's script https://github.com/osresearch/prom/blob/master/hex2png and the mac roms on archive dot org https://archive.org/details/mac_rom_archive_-_as_of_8-19-2011
if you have ImageMagick already installed:
$ perl hex2png.pl -y 1280 -w 32 mac_rom_archive_-_as_of_8-19-2011/36B7FB6C\ -\ Mac\ IIsi.ROM \ | convert - maciisi.png
Then a slice four columns wide was taken of the resulting image and knit into a scarf. The scarf is 1280 pixels/knit stitches long and therefore wraps natively in the columns of the scarf. if you want to make your own, you'll need a hacked consumer knitting machine or an industrial knitting machine or someone with a setup to machine knit it for you.
Here is how I set up my single-user self-hosted Mastodon instance. It was easy if you're a bit familiar with Linux and domain names. No need to be an expert.

Today's gorgeous image from accidental renaissance.

A big paper on twists in fermionic surface codes.
These codes are like the standard qubit surface codes, but built out of Majorana modes rather than qubits.
Twists are essentially lattice defects in a code, which open up new ways to store and manipulate qubits.
Put them together, and it seems you get a broader range of twists than in surface codes, and more efficient storage of logical information.
We now at least have a full slate of candidates for the #Python steering council! Now we just have to wait and see if how many more people get nominated before the 28th.

Incredibly rare photo of Schrödinger's cat.
I always follow back, and really appreciate and follow boosters
Maths at internet speed. On 16 Nov, Justin Gilmer https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.09055 makes a breakthrough on the #unionClosedSets conjecture, achieving a lower bound of 0.01 instead of the conjectured 0.5. The next day, Gil Kalai blogs about it at https://gilkalai.wordpress.com/2022/11/17/amazing-justin-gilmer-gave-a-constant-lower-bound-for-the-union-closed-sets-conjecture/ . Four days after that, three independent groups optimize the argument to \(\frac{3-\sqrt{5}}{2} \approx 0.38\): https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.11504 https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.11689 https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.11731 . New paper on #arXiv!
Imagine you're given a box that's supposed to produce some unknown qubit state \(|\psi\rangle\). While it mostly works, it occasionally fails and outputs the orthogonal state \(|\psi^\perp\rangle\). How can you combine several outputs of such a box to obtain one reliable copy of \(|\psi\rangle\)?
We call this problem "#quantum majority vote" since the goal is to find the majority state from a list of unknown quantum states.
Finished #Sandman on #Netflix last night. Great central performance by #TomSturridge . Probably the most faithful comics adaptation I''ve ever seen, with most episodes precisely matching a comics issue by @neilhimself and his various artists. I wonder what other comics series could support such a faithful issue-by-issue adaptation? (Side-by-side comparison images from https://screenrant.com/the-sandman-netflix-scenes-identically-match-comic-panels/ )
Life's short and I used #python and #matplotlib to show it.
